New Operational Load Monitoring Approach Using Digital Image Correlation and Image Classification Networks

Abstract The following paper presents a novel approach that can be applied to Operational Load Monitoring and Structural Health processes. is based on artificial intelligence (AI) digital image correlation (DIC) techniques. DIC an optical method allows measuring full-field structural displacements strains. In the presented only relatively small fragment of material’s surface monitored by DIC. obtained partial strains or then processed carefully trained AI model, classification network, able predict state whole structure (e.g. materials stresses, potential loss material continuity). assumption all possible load cases states identified simulated, so data from simulations used train network. A numerical example as proof concept. modern lightweight aerostructure in form hat-stiffened composite panel was its performed normal map. reference maps network were simulated numerically. prediction model estimates Tsai-Wu failure criterion value for material. accuracy predictions proved effectiveness efficiency proposed approach.
